Homelessness is a problem in which people, either by choice or unfortunate circumstances, live without consistent shelter and on the streets. Usually, this is because the person cannot afford adequate food and housing, but occasionally mental illness, such as schizophrenia, plays a role in homelessness. There are homeless shelters in most major American cities where the homeless can go to receive aid and a place to sleep but many shelters don't have the resources to handle all homeless cases.
