Governments vs. Markets: Julian Morris on Environmental Protection
|
"Which does a better job of protecting the environment: governments or markets? Reason Foundation's Vice President of Research Julian Morris spoke at Reason Foundation's annual Reason Weekend and challenged the idea that regulations and energy subsidies will save us from environmental disasters. In fact, they help cause them. When people are driven by profits and protected by property rights, Morris argues, environmentally friendly products will develop naturally.

Racial Discrimination And Environmental Justice
|
Camden has the second highest cancer rate in New Jersey, and the eighth highest in the nation thanks to over 100 toxic waste sites. When the St. Lawrence Cement Company tried to build yet another polluting factory in Camden, citizens banded together and convinced a district court to halt construction. Then the Supreme Court ruled in Alexander v Sandoval that citizens could not sue based on discriminatory effect. In order to block the construction of yet another polluter, citizens would need to show that there was intentional discrimination.
This clip is part of a video made by award-winning documentarian Stanley Nelson, which exposes the negative consequences of a federal judiciary that is increasingly opposed to civil rights protections. Mr. Nelson puts a human face on what has come to be known as the "rollback" of civil rights. The full film is 22 minutes and is an excellent teaching tool for those interested in educating friends, family, and neighbors about these issues.

Toxic Hotspots in L.A. County
|
Los Angeles County is one of the most polluted counties in the U.S. Recent studies identify particular L.A. neighborhoods as toxic hotspots because of heavy pollution and other environmental hazards compared to other areas in the county. In L.A. County, several communities are in close proximity to polluting sites. Studies demonstrate that many of these heavily polluted communities are also low-income communities of color. Some environmental groups, such as Pacoima Beautiful and the California Environmental Justice Alliance, call this neglectful city planning as well as environmental racism. Now, local non-profit environmental groups and the L.A. City Council are advocating for businesses to use cleaner technology. About two months ago, the L.A. City Council launched a campaign, called Clean Up Green Up, to encourage local businesses to implement greener technology.

"A New Sound: Green For All"
|
The dirty-energy economy has brought pollution and poverty to too many. But a clean-energy economy can bring opportunity, health, and wealth to struggling communities. Clean-energy jobs such as weatherizing homes, installing solar panels, and manufacturing wind turbines will put people to work in their own communities.
A new green economy will provide opportunity to people who have been left out of the old economy. That is the promise of Green For All.
Watch the video. Take Action. Share A New Sound with your friends and family.
